So I don't know how to turn UAC off and not sure how to update registry rather than maybe maunual and there is probably to many things to change for me. As for the files I would have to download fscaptain again in order to see those files. Is what you are saying is that it should say exactly that?

I have downloaded fscaptain again. I cannot find either of those files in my Microsoft flight folder though.

OK, I've recently experienced a problem like this myself: FSX crashes as soon as I launch the stand-alone version of FSCaptain. However, the gauge version, which you start from within FSX in the addons menu, works fine. Have you tried that, Mike?
(Travis: The only changes I made to FSX (which is on a separate drive from Win 8) are that I installed MCE and added the experimental Metroliner gauge. Could be a Win 8 or MCE problem?!)

Mike,
I've just ran a few tests on my old PC, and it seems that just being in the \Program Files (86)\ folder is enough to make FSX & FSCaptain not happy together. I even turned off UAC, and I still had to run the Administrator program "as Administrator."
FSX should really not be installed into the \Program Files\ style directories. The cleanest solution for you is to uninstall FSX and re-install it somewhere else. But I understand that you might not want to go through with that hassle - I didn't want to myself, which is why I moved my install and carefully updated all of my add-ons to point to its new location. (Although that was before I had any Orbx sceneries, etc.)
If you don't want to reinstall, and you don't feel that you can easily move FSX, I can offer you some suggestions to try and make it work, but please know that this isn't guaranteed to work.
First, if you aren't seeing all of the FSCaptain files, try this:
1. Make a directory on your C drive... name it "FSC Install" or something harmless. 2. Run the FSCaptain installer again by right clicking on it and select "Run as Administrator" (or however Windows 8 terms it) 3. When the installer asks you to confirm your flight sim directory, point it to the C:\FSC Install\ directory that you just made. 4. If the installer asks if you want to Administer for FSX, click yes. 5. You should see these directories were created - \FSCaptain, \Gauges, \Modules. There'll also be two EXEs in the \FSC Install directory. 6. Copy all of the directories & files into your real FSX folder. Overwrite everything that it asks to overwrite. You can now delete the C:\FSC Install\ directory that you made.
Now that you've got all the files in the proper place, you'll need to do lots of edits.
Open your DLL.XML file in a text editor. It should be in a location similar to C:\Users\[your username]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FSX\dll.xml
Find an entry like this one...
<Launch.Addon> <Name>FSCaptain</Name> <Disabled>False</Disabled> <ManualLoad>False</ManualLoad> <Path>FSCaptain\bin\FSCaptain.dll</Path> </Launch.Addon>
... and if your Path value is not what I show here in bold, change yours to be exactly like this value. Also check that both the Disabled and ManualLoad values are False.
Now open your FSX\FSCaptain\Bin folder. Right click on each EXE and select Properties. Then look on the "Compatibility" tab for a checkbox which should say "Run this program as administrator." Check it, and click Ok.
If you don't run FSX "As Administrator," try doing that. Right click FSX.EXE and select "Run as Administrator" and if FSX doesn't crash, but launches normally, you should see the usual "The publisher could not be verified. Are you sure you want to run this software?" question for FSCaptain.dll and then FSX will ask if you want to designate this as Trusted. Click yes/ok each time.
Good luck with this - if it doesn't work, then you can change the DLL.XML entry above to have Disabled set to True and FSCaptain should not load.

Peter, when you installed MCE, did you go through the "you must run FSX as administrator" business?
Try running the standalone EXE "As Administrator" and see if that works.
From what I understand of Mike's issue, its that FSX crashes soon after he starts it - that he doesn't even make it to the "Free Flight" screen.
Mike, am I correct in my understanding here??

Hi Travis,
I didn't run MCE at the time, and strangely enough it only happened with the Metroliner, not with the other plane I tried (QW RJ 100). Furthermore, when I now tried the Metroliner both with FCDU.exe as admin and not as admin it worked fine. Maybe it was a temporary problem, I never had it before.

What do mean by this? Download it to just a C/ directory and not C/programfiles(86)......?

Mike, I was rambling on about my old (5 year old) PC. It has Vista64 and a creaky old install of FSX.... Before you do anything with your PC & your FSX, I have a few more questions for you: How many FSX add-ons are you using? (That's aircraft, sceneries and other utilities.) How do you define the difference between "installing" and "downloading" things?

well I have two I think a scenery add-on for one airport haha really don't need it. and posky's Southwest airlines liveries. which I'm not sure but I thought there was a better addon than that, but I can't remember. So nothing I will miss or not be able to redownload and install. Download is how you get the files off the internet, whereas installing is where you take those files and apply them to your programs on your computer, through a setup.exe or copying the files to different locations.

That's okay Mike, I thought that I had perhaps fouled up in an earlier attempt to explain things.
Since you only have two other add-ons, I might suggest that you give the "copy-and-paste" method a try before uninstalling FSX.
If you have the free disk space, simply copy your \Microsoft Flight Simulator X\ to a different location. Then run FSX from that location just to test that it works.
If you have an anti-virus scanner, you may want to disable it for the duration of the copy, and you may want to ensure that it won't scan your new FSX location.
If your FSX copy works, I'd suggest installing FSCaptain to the new location. If all goes well, both FSX and FSCaptain should work okay.

I'm not completely sure but I think the copy and paste idea is working but it's not an easy program to learn. But the good news is it isn't crashing yet.

Mike, FSCaptain was very overwhelming for me when I first jumped in - just take small bites here and there and pretty soon everything will feel normal....
