I have downloaded, installed and uninstalled FSCaptain several times but when I start FSX I get the following error message "Flight Simulator has detected a problem with a third party software program (add-on). Name: FSCaptain Version: 1.2.1 Company: <Unknown> File: FSCaptain\Bin\FSCaptain.dll. Do you want to run this software (not recommended)". If I select the Yes button I get a "Fatal Error Occurred" and FSX shuts down. If I select the No button, FSX opens but without FSCaptain. I can open FSCaptain Administrator and FSCaptain ACARS Installer if I "Run As Administrator". Also, Gauges folder does not include FCOM.gau file. I would appreciate any suggestions on how to correct this problem.

FSCaptain is at version 1.4.5 (1.4.6 BETA 2) already, so I recommend using the most recent version.

Thanks,
However I uninstalled FSCaptain and installed v1.4.4, uninstalled and then installed v1.4.5. Same results, including the error message listing Version: 1.2.1

Wow, this is weird. I'm sorry, but you get to play "A Bunch of Questions with Trav" today.... - Did you ever have FSCaptain version 1.2.1 (which by my accounting is two years old) installed on your PC?
- If so, have you moved your FSX installation since - e.g., from "C:\Program Files\" to "F:\FSX\"?
- Regardless if you've moved FSX or not, do you have FSX inside one of the "\Program Files\" folders?
- Do you run FSX "as Administrator?"
- When you uninstall FSCaptain, do you either use the uninstaller or the Windows Control Panel?
- Do you reboot before re-installing FSCaptain?
- Have you tried running FSX while FSCaptain is uninstalled to see if the "problem with a third party software program" error occurs at that time?
- When you have FSCaptain installed, does your Gauges folder contain a folder named "\FCOMPNL\"?
I've a few more questions, but I'll stop here for the moment....

1. No. Purchased from PC Aviator on 10/2/13 2. No 3. File location is C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Flight Simulator X 4. Tried "Run as administrator" and got the same results. 5. Used ACARS to remove gauges, ran "Uninstall FSCaptain.exe" and then deleted FSCaptain folder. 6. Just rebooted and reinstalled. Same results. 7. After uninstalling FSCaptain, error message does not appear and FSX starts normally. 8. Yes. There is no subfolder for FSX but there are a number of BMP, XML and TXT files
Thank you for your time.

I have gone back and run every .exe file (Uninstall FSCaptain, Install FSCaptain, and FSX) as Administrator. Same results. I'm running Windows 8 which I suspect is the culprit.
Thanks

Well I hope that's not the case - I was thinking about this overnight and I kept returning to an aggressive A/V program. (The missing gauges are what strikes me.)
If you like, I could try and ZIP the gauges and send them via email - it shouldn't be too large.
But before I do, one more question - what's the "date modified" timestamp on your \FSCaptain\Bin\FSCaptain.dll file? If it's out of joint I might as well include that too....

Travis,
The FSCaptian.dll Date Modified: 9/17/2013 Size: 1,604 KB
I have gone back to the original Zip file when trying to reinstall.
FProt Antivirus is running. Windows Firewall is set to "Notify me when Windows Firewall blocks a new app."
File size is not a problem.
Thanks again,
Bob Jenkins

Is everyone who is experiencing these problems running in the standard \Program Files\ folder?
Do you have UAC turned on or off?
Are you running the simulator & FSCaptain "as administrator" or not?
Do you also have the "missing gauges" problem that Bob reported last year??

not sure if I'm understanding your questions.
I installed through the install.exe to my c/progamfiles(86)/microsoftgames/microsoftflightsim file
don't know what uac is
I can't launch FSX when fscaptain is installed
don't know about missing gauges
hope that helps?

One of the biggest problems with FSX addons in general is the way windows handles access rights to files when FSX is installed in c/progamfiles(86). Even when you are running FSX as administrator User Access Control (UAC) may deny a program to read or modify a file.
The best way to avoid this is to install FSX in a different directory, for instance C:/FSX . Almost anything but Programs or Program Files (x86) (or some other system controlled directories) will do.
If you have not many addons installed, I would suggest to reinstall FSX in a different directory. Alternatively you can disable UAC. You need to google hoe to do that, it is a little bit (but not overly) tricky.
Cheers, Peter

On my older Vista64 PC, I originally installed FSX-SP2 to ProgramFiles(86) and left UAC activated. I had nothing but problems with many add-ons.
I then moved my FSX installation (literally with Windows Explorer... copy the original folder, paste it into a new location, and then delete the original) and updated my FSX registry entries (and my working add-ons' paths) and even with UAC still active, everything just worked.
Mike,
In your FSX.CFG file, do you have any entries such as these? (The random characters at the end of each entry will always be different, and of course the paths will be different.)
F:\FlightSim\FSCaptain\bin\FSCaptain.dll.[random characters]=1 F:\FlightSim\GAUGES\FCDU2.GAU.[random characters]=2 F:\FlightSim\GAUGES\FCDU.GAU.[random characters]=2 F:\FlightSim\GAUGES\FCOM.GAU.[random characters]=2
In your DLL.XML file, do you have an entry similar to this:
<Launch.Addon> <Name>FSCaptain</Name> <Disabled>False</Disabled> <ManualLoad>False</ManualLoad> <Path>FSCaptain\bin\FSCaptain.dll</Path> </Launch.Addon>
