Hello, Like the subject says, I am an old geezer and have not been able to get FSCaptain running in my FSX. For the last week I have tried to follow the help in the program, this forum, and the general Internet without success. Here is what I can remember what I have seen and done... - Installed/reinstalled multiple times
- Tried to read the Help files, but was overwhelmed.
- Tried to read the logs, but just got confused.
- Created/recreated my pilot without success.
- I only added the Default C172 with the FCDU.
- I did not try to open FSX since FSC would not work.
- My Steam folder is on the root of my C:\ drive. It is *not* under Program Files.
Your help would be appreciated. I am including my zipped logs. Please advise if I can be of assistance. Calvin

Hello Calvin, welcome to the FSCaptain forum. I am sorry that you have so much trouble getting started with FSCaptain. I had a look at your log files (they are only meant to help us troubleshooting, you don't have to try to decipher it). You seem to have run the FSCaptain Administrator three times since your latest reinstallation. The first two times, it didn't do much, but the third time it started to read the information about all the aircraft you have installed. For some reason, it stopped when it scanned information about the HMS Bounty.
This tells us that you have installed FSCaptain into the correct folder, and that it is able to find (at least some of) the information it needs. Here are some things you can do to make progress:
- FSCaptain has a plethora of features and options, but for a new user, most of them are irrelevant. The only helpfile you need to consult right now is "Tutorial.pdf". Once you get more comfortable, scan through the user guide to learn a bit more about all FSCaptain features. All the other documentation deals with special topics that are not relevant to resolve your problems.
- You mention that you haven't tried to open FSX yet, but that is one of the first things you should do. In short: (i) open the Administrator and create an airline and pilot, disregarding any options for now; (ii) open FSX and hop into the C172 or any other aircraft; (iii) start the FCDU and pick a flight. The FCDU only works when the simulator is running.
- If that does not work for you, then we need to find out why. Here are two ideas of what could go wrong: + verify that you have installed the correct version of FSCaptain. You need the full installer of the 32 bit version. On the web page, that would be "FSCaptain 1.8.3 SimConnect 32-bit Full Installer - FSX, FSX-SE, and Prepar3D 2 and 3" + It is odd that the Administrator stopped scanning at the HMS Bounty. It could be (though it is not likely) that FSCaptain got confused by that model, which probably does not have the same configuration data as an airplane. For the sake of testing, move the HMS Bounty folder from "SimObjects\Airplanes" to another folder and see if FSCaptain's Administrator then works. Generally, I would expect this model to be in "SimObjects\Boats", but the correct location will probably be specified in the HMS Bounty documentation.
Travis will probably have more ideas, but for now try the steps above and let us know if there is any progress. Cheers, Peter

Hi Peter, Thank you for your assistance. My normally gimpy noodle is not being to gimpy. When I read your message I was inspired to go look at the logs about the HMSBountyFSX and remembered the "no_scan_folders.txt" file I read abpot somewhere. I added the Bounty under the "## Freeware and Commercial folders" section and Presto! The Admimistrator works as I believe it should. FYI - If you weren't aware, the HMS Bounty is a wind powered only (it has no engine) vessel in FSX provided by the venerable Milton Shupe, et. al. As a mariner at heart, I can testify it sails exactly as anticipated within the confines of FSX which is supposed to be impossible according to Microsoft. Thanks again for the help. Take care.

Howdy,
Looks like I'm not out of the woods just yet. The FSX B738 and A321 Panel.cfg's confirm the FCDU Installer worked, but I can't get the FCDU's to show up. I guess I can try to use the external FCDU (not as easy), but wanted to pass on the issue. The logs are attached.

Hi Calvin, Please ZIP and post the panel.cfg files from those aircraft so I can look at them. EMailing them is fine, if you prefer. One thing I can see from your logs is that the FCDU.EXE thinks it is supporting FS9. (Which is impossible.) Could you please open your \FSCaptain\Config\profile.cfg file and edit the line which begins with "SUPPORTS" to read as I have listed here:
SUPPORTS=11 That should switch on the "FSX Steam" flag in FSCaptain... although you may be one of the first Captains to do so.
Please do not post your profile.cfg file in the forum! It contains your license information and that would allow anyone to attempt running FSCaptain as you. Best,

Hi Calvin,
I took your Default B738 panel and copied the text into my Default B738 panel. Then I made one edit.
I changed...
... to...
The reason for that change is, the "gauge container" for the ACARS has to match the "gauge container" for the FDR which is in the [VCockpit01] section of the file. (It's FCDUB!FDR in there.)
Once I did that, I was able to launch my 738 and to open and operate the FCDU as expected.
Please try that change and see what occurs.
I don't have the Default A321 any longer, so I can't test that file... but I do see that in the A321 file, both FCDUB gauge containers do match.
So I want to ask you... when you write that for you, FSCaptain "would not work", what exactly happens?
Does nothing open on the simulator screen? Is there a "black rectangle" somewhere?? Does the FCDU appear... only to be unhappy about something???
Best,

Thank you, but no FCDU either by SHIFT+2 or CTRL+SHIFT+6. Also, in either the A321 or B738 the menu Add-ons>>Views>>Instrument Panel does not show the FCDU anywhere. It is like it was not installed.

Calvin,
Just focusing on your B738 for now, since you've installed the FCDU into Window02, you should see it when you press Shift+3.
If that still does not work, I will return on my Thursday (I'm currently on Pillow Approach) with another small test for you. That other thread from a few years back was from another Steam Captain, and IIRC he also had a problem in having edits to his panel.cfg files to be recognized.
From brief readings, there are other FSX Steam users (non-FSCaptains) who have described similar behaviors (edits to panel.cfg files not being recognized, etc.)
Could you please post (or email) the aircraft.cfg file from your Default 738 so I can check things there?
Best,

Hi Calvin,
This is nagging me so I read a bit more, and I'd like to ask if you have the following path on your PC:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\FSX\DLC\379233\SimObjects\Airplanes
I guess that "379233" number could be different... but I'm basically wondering if Steam keeps a different set of some/all aircraft files in a different location.
If you have that location, can you find a B737_800 folder with a Panel folder inside it?
Best,

Thank you. I do not have that path. My path is… C:\1_Steam\steamapps\common\FSX\DLC\379233\SimObjects\Airplanes I labeled it that way to keep my install in the front of the disk and the top of the file list. It did have a panel.cfg, but I could not edit it. There is no FCDU reference in the panel.cfg. Calvin

Hi Calvin, great that you resolved the problems with the Administrator. As for the A321, I just installed a new copy of FSCaptain in FSX Steam and everything worked well. I didn't try out the keyboard shortcuts, but the in-game FCDU was accessible via the View->Instruments->FCDU menu subpanel of FSX. I have attached my panel.cfg of the A321 after installing the FCDU gauge, so that you can compare it with yours. The HMS Bounty looks great, I will probably install it. After all, I once spent two hours on the replica of it that was used for the 1984 movie with Anthony Hopkins and Mel Gibson. But that actually had an auxiliary engine and used it Cheers, Peter P.S.: sorry, I wrote that before I saw your last post. I will look at your panel.cfg right away Attachments:panel.cfg (5.7 KB)

Here is my panel for the 737, it also works for me. I suggest to make a backup copy of your current panel.cfg and try mine on your system. panel.cfg (6.29 KB)

Thanks Peter. I tried it in the A321, but the FCDU doesn't show up in the Views>>Instrument Panel, but "Window05=FCDU" is in the panel.cfg. Testing the B738. [Edit - It did not work in the B738 and "Window05=FCDU" is in the panel.cfg.]

Hi Peter,
Given your success. I decided to uninstall/re-install a fresh download and try again. Hopefully, I can duplicate your experience.
