To the management of ACME airlinesMy Union rep seems to agree with me that your promotion policy is unfair. I'm called again and again to do short haul flights, between 1 and 2 hours max. So by the time I'm at cruising altitude I hardly get the time to enjoy a coffee, let alone a snack, because I've to start preparing my descent and arrival. Those called for long haul flights can not only enjoy a nice meal while enjoying the view, they're even in title to go for a power nap. Yet those lazy captains get promotion a lot faster than I do just because they're spending more time in the air!? Really? And they suppose to have more flying experience then us the short haul captains? During their long haul flights I had to perform multiple takeoff's and landings. Don't you think it would be more fair to take into account the number of flights (takeoff's/landings) to decide who gets a promotion? Just saying ..... Cheers, Luc

Nice one Of course I am only a lowly Assistant to the CEO, so I cannot make such decisions. However, since we are in the same union, I support your cause Solidarity! Peter

Concur!!! I also do short hauls with the more frequent takeoff's and landings, this make way more additional amount of times the grandchild in the jump seat want's grandpa's attention at those critical moments.

Dutch and I have overseen the negotiations between management and the Captain's Union for nearly ten years, and this would be a very new wrinkle to deal with. Over twenty years ago, management foresaw such a demand be met with the proposal that all Captains choose their preferred method of advancement along one of two tracks -- "Total Hours in Air" or "Completed Flights". Management has broken out their work on this and their first insistence is this be a decision to be made once and was thereafter irrevocable for each Captain's term of employment.... For example, were this to become official policy, then on the date of that new policy John Smith for Landmark Airlines might decide to have all advancement & pay be made on the basis of Completed Flights instead of Total Hours in Air. John's entire employment history would be converted to the alternate basis, and John's future advancement & pay would be made solely on that model. Then again, on that same date Jane Smythe for Global Airlines might decide to remain on the current Total Hours in Air basis. Jane's history would not change, and all future advancement & pay would be made on the existing model. Please let us know what to take back to management for their consideration. Best,
