Hi there,
Was looking forward to installing you FSCaptain software, however I'm running Windows XP. From what I've read the latest version doesn't run on XP so I've then tried to set up a network setup on a Win 7 PC and after some time I've been able to get to a point where it asks to install the dll.xml, however at this point nothing happens. I've gone looking for the folder it's looking for however can't find it.
Have I missed anything here?

Hi George,
there are some issues with XP (because the C++ libraries are outdated in it), but most of the problems should have been fixed in version 1.7.2. Here is the relevant information from the 1.7.2 readme.txt file: Cheers, Peter

Hi George,
The Administrator and the gauges all work with Windows XP. (The notes that Peter raised in regards to the .Net Framework 3.5 being necessary, included.)
The only thing that cannot run on XP is the FCDU.EXE program. It can't run on XP, due to a DirectX conflict that I cannot work around.
However if you have a Windows 7 machine on your network, and if it's SimConnect-compatible with your XP simulator (if you can run a weather engine on Win7 that can inject weather into your XP simulator) then I would dearly hope that you could run the FCDU.EXE from your XP PC on your Win 7 PC. (Set up a shortcut on your Win7 machine to the FCDU installed on XP... perhaps as a trusted administrator?)
This is my assumption as I don't have an XP machine to test with. (I do network from Vista64 to Win7, so I know that works.)
We would be with you in your attempts to test, and would eagerly encourage such.
Regards,

To recap, you do not have to install FSCaptain on your remote (Win7) machine. If you have a SimConnect-ed Win7 PC, just browse to your shared XP installation folder from Win7 and run the FCDU.EXE (which is installed on your XP machine) from your Win7 PC.
You will need to use UNC paths in some of your FSCaptain configuration files - for example your flight plans would need to use a reference such as...
\\MY-XP-PC\DOCUMENTS\FSX FILES\
... instead of...
C:\DOCUMENTS\FSX FILES\
... and perhaps the same for any weather engine files that might be stored on the XP-PC.

Ok, looks like I have V1.7.1 not V1.7.2 as mentioned above. I have also checked I'm definitely running .NET3.5 (SP1)

BTW I've installed the software again. It's installed the Admin and the FCDU. I double click both and there is an error stating that they cannot run in Win 32. If you have an email address I can send you a screen shot.

Ok, sorry to say I've tried what you've recommended but still not getting anywhere. I can run the FCDU over the network however it says that it can't find the simulator.

George,
There are two other things....
First, for some time, FSCaptain uses the Visual C++ 2013 RTL libraries which earlier testing has shown that not all Captains have. To check, you should run the Administrator and see if it crashes. If it does, you most likely need the Microsoft VC++ 2013 libraries (the x86 version we believe) which you can download from here: www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=40784 - once there, just click Download and then select the x86 version. (And if that doesn't allow you to run FSCaptain, go back and download the x64 version from the same page.)
Now I don't think that's the main issue you have. You say you get a message that it can't run in Win 32. But you would need these C++ RTL libraries regardless, so I'd
I would want you to try running the latest builds - currently 1.7.2 Release Candidate 1 is available to the public. (RC2 was just posted for the Alpha Test team an hour or so ago.)
You can download the 1.7.2 RC 1 Fixpack here. Just install it over your current installation. We have several XP testers as well as FS9 testers on the Alpha team and they can all run the 1.7.2 releases.
If you have any screenshots or log files to share with us, you can email us by following the (hopefully) spambot-proof instructions in the post that I've linked to in my signature below.
