Dutch--just to let you know I tracked down the issue and am posting it here if there ever is a another case like it--
The problem was that my "Application Information" service was disabled. This disabled that ability of the program to write the text files as an administrator thus rendering the text and cfg files as Read Only. The problem was when modifying the files, the lack of of privilege on the text file was all it took to munge the FCOM gauge.
Serviced is enabled, program is tested--everything works well. It's an obscure service but in my zeal to eliminate unnecessary services, this being disabled caused the issue.
Thanks for all your help!
