This sounds a bit over the top and may be more of a reflection of years' past when the Captain or FO would announce to the passengers something along these lines, '(mic click on) This is your Captain speaking, have a look out the right side of the aircraft and you can see Hoover Dam. The dam was built in 1931 in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River (mic click off)'. Ideally FSC would need to look at weather conditions between its location and the Point of Interest as possible, or even enter a qualifier, 'if you look hard thru the haze...you can see Hoover Dam...' You could have the Captain narrate for POI
I've always felt a little more word from the flight deck would be in order, especially ones that would automatically triggered, i.e. did not follow a LSK click for example like announcing moderate turbulence or what have you. Anyway, it sounds like an interesting feature to add in and you would need to take care not to overdo it either and so these would be easter eggs of a sort. But man, I'd love that!! I might even look out the window to see myself!! Here are some landmarks I can think of right off the bat:
Golden Gate Bridge Mackinac Bridge Devil's Tower Grand Canyon Mt Saint Helens Zion National Park Empire State Building Tallest Peak in each state, or in states w/ mountains Continental Divide You Name It!!!

I guess I am the only person digging this idea! Oh well I tried!

I've always figured that was the captain's job. Hit that chime and make the announcement. All kidding aside, I know Travis has been disposed lately and he's often the one that jumps on these kinds of ideas.

Hi Noel,
I wanted to leave a reply to Travis and Dutch, but they are pretty busy with other stuff right now. I personally do not think that this is feasible because it depends a lot on where you like to fly. My personal list would not include any of the landmarks you suggest, but instead something like
CN Tower Parliament Hill Peggy's Cove Lake Louise Gros Morne Lake Manicouagan
I think the number of options worldwide is simply too large.
Best regards, Peter

That's my thought as well. It isn't so much the programming side as it's the audio side. Poor Travis would spend the next 10,000 hours of his life recording dialogue.

Thanks for your replies. I see the idea really as surprise easter eggs so in that regard not 10,000 sites worthy of referencing, but maybe for example in the US 100 tops, very major sites only. But even 100 would take a while to record correctly I get that!

On a second thought: John's observation that such announcements are often made by the captain may offer a route: each user can easily create their own set of audio files, and if Travis would implement your idea, you (the captain) could record all landmarks that you like.

Peter Sir that is awesome what a cool idea! Can I send a donation to help pay for this extra work? No truly, you folks are the most accommodating group of developers in the history of flight simulation! I'm not expecting follow thru on this concept but just for being open enough to give it the time of day warrants recognition!
Cheers and don't get any on ya!

Hi Noel,
thank you kindly for offering a donation, but implementing your idea solely depends on how much time Travis will have to do so. He has very limited time right now (that's why he is not on the forum that often anymore), but he is working on 1.8.2, albeit at a reduced rate. However, your idea sounds very feasible, all one needs to do is to add a file with a list of coordinates and sound files that would be played if you are within a certain range of a landmark, I think. I will make him aware of your idea.
Cheers, Peter

Hi Noel,
Such an idea has been part of FSCaptain for many years - but it's not been fully implemented.
Let me check what's ever been done, and what might need to be done.
IIRC, there are 10 or so spots for an FO to make a Targeted Comment... and the same amount of spots to make General Comments.
Adding one or the other for Captains would not take a lot of work. But having Captains commit to the recordings might be the tipping point....
Best,

Best, Even without recordings, for the goofy cos-player types who will just make the impromptu speech at their computer, maybe a small list of FO dialogs urging the captain to speak when approaching a user list of landmarks? "We're coming up on something neat, wanna let the cabin know?"

Of course it could be a joined effort. If we have a few Captains for each region/country who could provide the coordinates and recordings for the POI of their area and share them with everyone here on the forum then it would make it all more feasible? Cheers, Luc

Even without recordings, for the goofy cos-player types who will just make the impromptu speech at their computer, maybe a small list of FO dialogs urging the captain to speak when approaching a user list of landmarks? "We're coming up on something neat, wanna let the cabin know?" Now this is something that I can see be made to work. A message would appear on the FCDU, to let the Captain know what's going on, and some audio would play. We'd need a cfg file which would include certain bits of data. Off the top of my head: - Longitude / Latitude.
- Short, but descriptive name to display in an FCDU message.
- Possibly a 'type' descriptor - "natural feature", "national or local capital", "city", etc.
- A flag to indicate if the POI would be visible at night.
- Some indication of the likelihood of such a call out per-flight (0% to 100% chance).
- ID number (max of 4 digits) that would point to a Captain-recorded audio which would play to the cockpit instead of the FO's prompt.
My thinking on that last bit is, if the Captain would like to record their own audio for placement in their \FSCaptain\Sound\POI\ folder, that file would automagically play.
If the Captain wants to wing it with the announcement, an FO audio would play as you suggest. (As long as you have an FO.)
I'll try something clever to nix the prompt if there's an overcast level between your aircraft and the ground.
How does this sound??
Best,
