Captains, I ran the Windows 10 upgrade last evening, and read a book while all the downloading / restarting excitement went on. After an hour or so I had Windows 10 running. However.... Two of my physical drives are not recognized by Windows. They just happen to be my FSX and my P3D drives! Backups were made just hours before, so I'm not panicking about the data. Disk Management says they're not initialized, and when I go to initialize them, DM gives me the response "Incorrect function." Windows says the drivers are the most current, and Windows can see the manufacturer and model names. So they're both there, but I don't seem to be able to use them. So just a bit of frustration for the moment....

Hi Travis,
Sorry to hear about all your problems. We seem to spend an awful lot of our time getting everything playing nicely together.
There's always one that gets fed up and goes in for his tea, and he's usually the one that owns the only ball.
Best of luck with sorting your drives out.
I'm sure we all feel for you.
Regards Steve

Thanks Steve! I posted this because I'm perfectly perplexed, and was hopeful that some Captain might recognize the symptoms and know of a Magic Bullet I could use. When I phoned the drive manufacturer early in my morning, the tech (and not a "Tier-I tech"!) was just as flummoxed. I know the drives are present and properly connected (I checked), so tomorrow I'll pick up a SATA - USB adapter to check them using a different controller. Peter has also introduced me to an acquaintance of his ( Rufus Linu-Buntu, as I calls 'im) and I'll spend some PC time in my evening to see if I can see things in a different way. If this is the worst thing to happen to me this week, I'll have a great week! Oh, and don't be surprised if that "8GB RAM" you see in my .signature suddenly changes to "16GB RAM" before the weekend. Best,

The secret sauce in this case turns out to be that I needed to go to Device Manager and "Uninstall" both drives, "Scan for Hardware Changes," and reboot my PC. Both sims are back and I even made a Trike flight around a recently-purchased airport for fun. Best,

And some areas are impenetrable - that "Incorrect Function" 'error message'. Sheesh! Still, I've had one good thing come from the upgrade... likely some cobwebs were cleared in a quiet area.... I don't know if I've mentioned this in public, but for the last 2-3 years my FCDU gauges would not produce any sound. Nothing. Yesterday I was preparing for a FSX flight when I noticed the ambient airport & engine sounds were terribly louder than normal. The aircraft I was in had an FCDU installed, so I opened it rather than the EXE, and hey presto... sounds! Silver linings and all that, I presume. Best,

I forgot to mention that I upgraded my RAM to 16GB today. I bought sticks with lower latency so I'm sidelining the 8GB pair for now.
I'll keep the 'normal' speed for 24 hours or so and watch for gremlins. Then I'll bump things up and start benchmarking.
(I did break a blade on my case's side fan, so I'm looking for another silent 230mm fan... without those darn LEDs.)

What is it about pretty flashing lights...…….I want a fan not a neon sign. Maybe I'm just getting old.

(I did break a blade on my case's side fan, so I'm looking for another silent 230mm fan... without those darn LEDs.) I recently built a new computer and saw lots of fans without LEDs. I wanted some LED for flare, but not have the thing lit like the Griswold's at Christmas. Are you familiar with pcpartpicker.com? It helped me find and plan my build.

Hee hee. My latest case (a giant black Thermaltake, IIRC) came with two 'color LED' fans, and a switch allowed me to set Red, Green, Blue, some Disco Inferno mode, and Off. I used Off until I updated my graphics card to a 1070ti - it has a while LED 'spine' which shows its name. (And which can't be turned off.) So I experimented with the fans, and I found that a steady Green color with all of the other Black around it reminded me of the ST:TNG Borg motif. So a steady and subdued Green it is for now. ------ I'm unaware of that site - these days I usually go to the Usual Suspects (*m*z*n and N*w*gg). On my first PC build back in the 90s, I worked in Silicon Valley so I actually drove around to local importers and manufacturers... and I had tons of Fry's Electronics in the area. Best,

Best, I was unaware of it until I started researching parts (I hadn't built a computer in almost twenty years). I liked that I configured my system, then had a dashboard to track prices on multiple sites (including your usual suspects) and watch for items to go on sale. This is the system I ended up building. pcpartpicker.com/list/MrGtK4All the LEDs in mine (motherboard, RAM sticks, AIO cooler pump and fans, and GPU) are RGB addressable so I can control the colors with their software. Currently they are lit in a Seattle Seahawks theme, though the GPU and the cooling pump gradient to red as the GPU or CPU heats up past set temperatures.

I built my first PC - a 386 - in the '90's, also while in the Silicon Valley. Man, I never thought I'd look back on the days when Frye's was, well, Frye's. And OEM was just a car trunk away. Man, those were the days. Windows 10 - well I'm still on 7 'cuz y'all still seem to be having an interesting time with the upgrade. My wife - who is a genius with PCs, about threw the cat through the window.

I bought an early x486 from a place in a strip mall in Milpitas. It was... very nice for its short lifetime. The Voodoo video card had a much shorter lifespan.... Best,
