Just for the fun of it I decided to try a FSCaptain/FSX/ASN/PMDG 737 700 flight near Hurricane Matthew tonight. With only 15 passengers 8900lb payload and 10000lbs of fuel I departed from Kingston Jamaica MKJP to Haiti MTPP. The center of the storm was still 2 or 3 hundred miles south of my flight plan.
I had ASN16 running and right away Company tried to hold my flight for weather. Conditions at MTTP were horrible, winds 102kts out of 110 and visibility was less than 4 miles in rain. I decided to request permission and go anyways which they granted and off we went. I figured if the winds were really that bad when I got there I could try for an alternate but either way it would be interesting. Some pretty nasty thunderstorms during my climb made for a bumpy ride but the wings didn't fall off and we made it up to cruise of FL 270. Most of the cruise was light turbulence and soon we began our decent into Haiti.
When I started to decend winds were variable about 20 to 30 kts at altitude and I thought oh it wont be 100 kts down on the runway like asn is saying... however as we got lower the winds seemed to keep getting stronger and stronger. At 1500 feet agl winds were about 65 knts and climbing so maybe ASN was right it would be over 100 kts on the runway.
I programmed my fmc for RNAV Runway 9 which would put me into that 102 knt at a slight crosswind. Decided to give this a shot. Also just to see how it would work I had the autopilot setup for an autoland on the ILS. Captured the glideslope and continued my decent towards the runway and everything looked ok but when I was about 200 ft above and from the numbers winds had picked up to about 110kts and I was about 40 feet left of centerline. I ddint think the autoland was going to get me on the runway so I took over shutting off the autothrottle then the autopilot and began flying directly into the wind at a heading of about 110 bringing me closer to the runway centerline setting up for a crab to land. (Ive done a landing with headwinds stronger than my airspeed in my A2A J3 Cub) but really didnt think I could pull it off in a 737.) Amazingly I was able to gently nudge it up to the runway close to centerline and gradually decend to land. At touchdown my airpeed was less than windspeed and I was flying backwards at maybe 5 or 8 kts! I ended up scoring a 92 on the flight! Probably the most fun I've had in a long time on FSX.. Thank you FSCAPTAIN,PMDG,FSX,ASN and Hurricane Matthew!
(By the way my hopes and prayers that people make it through the storm ok in the next few days)
Attached is a screen shot of my flight info if anyone wants to recreate and give it a shot for themselves I know you can set a historical time in ASN and maybe get the same weather I had.
